Where we work

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is Ubantu’s newest state — and it began differently. Here the government came to the Foundation: in August 2025 the State Rural Livelihood Mission invited Ubantu to run training in Haldwani.

Invited by the State Rural Livelihood Mission

Haldwani, district Nainital · August 2025

In August 2025 Ubantu Foundation was invited by the State Rural Livelihood Mission, Uttarakhand (SRLM) and the Rural Entrepreneurship Acceleration Project (REAP) to organise vocational training programmes in Haldwani district.

The training covered candle making and food processing — two trades chosen because they can be started with modest equipment, use locally available raw material, and sell well into local and festival markets.

This invitation matters for a reason that has nothing to do with the training itself. A state livelihood mission asking an outside organisation to deliver its programme is a judgement about that organisation’s track record — and it is the first time Ubantu has been approached this way rather than proposing the work itself.

Building cooperatives that can stand on their own

Across Uttarakhand · Ongoing

Uttarakhand is one of the states where Ubantu has adopted multi-purpose cooperative societies, alongside Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and West Bengal.

The support is practical rather than ceremonial: helping interested groups through the process of registering a cooperative society, then building the capacity of members of newly formed societies in business development and in setting up livelihood enterprises that can actually meet their goals.
